career change

hello i hold a degree in Humanities and i have worked as high school teacher .I want a change .I like fields like design /social entrepreneurship /journalism ...............

What kind of help can i get from educational consulting ?I want to focus in one goal and make it true ..........Did u have same experiences ?

Hi Anna,

Just a word about how I went about making a career change.
One thing to keep in mind, if you go to a private career counselor, you can spend a lot of money. It might be worth it, or not. But I work at a college, and many people are not aware that the career center at colleges is open to the public, with trained career counselors and a multitute of assessment tools to use for free.

What made a difference for me, and something I had not done before, was to forget the job titles, and do an assessment of my values. Then I divided the things I wanted and felt I needed, based on those values, into three categories: gotta have, want to have, and can take or leave.

My strongest value was that I needed to be doing something that helped better people's lives, either individually or collectively. Also I needed a good amount of people contact.

After doing my exercise, I started looking for job titles and environments that supported my values. I had been working as exec asst in a high tech industry, and after this self evaluation, ended up finding a job working at a college, helping people find jobs for work experience in their career paths. I sacrificed some salary level, (that was not a top value for me), but am much happier.

I agree with your approach .Since you have experience in career counselling in colleges ,can you talk to me about that ?
There are people that are so confused that they think 5-6 fields :fashion /politics /psychotherapy /business/PR /ALTERNATIVE MEDECINE ............ETC .In such cases ,with so much variety how career tests can help ?

I begin to understand that i have a problem with my education ,which i believe that lucks in the opportunities that can offer in the job market .You see i hold a degree in Humanities [History /Archaeology /Art history ]...........So iam considering to go back for a degree in Businness or the Law ..........In these cases how career tests can help ? Do you think there is a niche for everyone when it comes to work ?
