I'm going through a divorce and I want to go back to school. I'm choosing nursing as a career. I had no idea that it would be so bad. I feel it's my calling at this time. The hours are flexible - so I can be home with my children during the day and work at night. If anyone has any advice? Thanks

Just felt i should give a wee response. You will always have a job with nursing...there is presently a shortage, and I believe, always will be a shortage until nurses stand up and demand more respect. Most nursing positions are 12hr shifts which at first seems beneficial in that you work less days, but the exhaustion factor definitely takes it's toll. If you work night shift, it takes a full day to recover after a night shift. Think long and hard about it. If you love medicine and don't mind taking orders, can stand on your feet for long hours, and can stand up for yourself...go for it! Nursing can be very rewarding. There are many aspects of nursing to choose from, depending on where you live. And, you can do travel nursing one day in the future if you decide you need a little excitement. If you do end up going for nursing, I suggest you get some hospital experience under your belt before working as an office or clinic nurse, as most jobs look more favorably on hospital experience as providing you with the skills they seek.
Good luck!

Mtnlass,
Thanks for your reply. I'm starting out with school. I will complete my nursing degree in 2007. When my divorce is final - I will take your advice and try to work on the weekends that I don't have my children. It is sad that nurses are treated that way. I have had four children - and I know for a fact - nurses do all the work - the doctor is just there to catch the baby and send you the bill!!! Being a mother - that too is a job that is not always rewarded - I'm looking at nursing as a job that will be rewarded - maybe not now - surely when I die.
Thanks again for your feedback. God bless you.
